Substance Abuse Services

MISSION

To help our students realize their potential through the development of the life and coping skills necessary for success without the abuse of drugs and alcohol.

VISION

Through academic and clinical services, these students will maximize their potential and become contributing members to their university community.

GOALS

  • Identify high risk substance abuse behavior and determine appropriate level of care in order to ensure student development and success.
  • Use education and treatment alternatives to aid in life and coping skill development in order for students to maximize their potential.
  • Provide a training ground for developing helping professionals in advanced degree programs.
  • Conduct applied research and program evaluation in order to contribute to the field of substance abuse treatment and education.

Individual Therapy

The clinical team consist of three licensed substance abuse counselors and therapist. After the student undergoes his/her evaluation, Adam Downs, Ph.D, LMFT, Director of Substance Abuse Services will assign them to the clinician that is the best fit. Students will meet weekly for an hour session to discuss topics of concern. We believe that substance abuse is a symptom of a larger problem and therefore we treat the whole student, not just the substance abuse.

Group Therapy

We understand that students looks to each other for peer validation for their behaviors. Sometimes this leads to participation in high risk activities. We believe that this same principle can be applied in a positive manner, and students can support one another in academic and personal achievements. The goals is for the members of the group to create bonds with one another and share responsibility for each others’ successes in both academics and sobriety efforts. Each member of the group has unique strengths and values which they bring to the group setting.  It is the aim of the program to help the student create new positive experiences on this campus and provide a safe environment to asses the path in which led them to this point and create a plan for the road which leads ahead.

Family Therapy

We believe that it is important to involve families in the treatment of substance abuse, especially with the collegiate population. College is a time of transition for students trying to become independent but they still need assistance in doing so. Family involvement is key to this process. We contact families regularly through phone calls. We also will have family sessions by phone or in person when possible with the student and family together to address goals, responsibility, communication, and progress. If there are problems with the students progress, the family will be notified by one of the counseling staff members.

Psycho-Education

The clinical team oversees four psycho-education workshops for basic student understanding of substance abuse and how it is impacting their lives. The tops of these educational workshops are:

  • Pleasure Unwoven – the brain disease of addiction
  • Alcohol and Other Drugs: The Mind Body Connection
  • Identifying Strengths
  • Strategies for Behavioral Change

UA MPACT

Substance Abuse Services works in collaboration with Student Affairs.

Evaluation

Once a student is referred to the office of Substance Abuse Services in the Student Health Center, each student meets with Adam Downs, Ph.D, LMFT, Director of Substance Abuse Service for an assessment and evaluation for programming fit. Based on in-depth interview and collaboration with referral source, program recommendation is made.
